Most people immediately recognize the phrase as part of the US Postal Service workers’ creed. And US postal workers pretty much live up to it. Our own “mailman” has faithfully delivered our mail in the late morning or early afternoon until the past couple of weeks. On one occasion, the mail delivery occurred after we had gone to bed. That, and we aren’t the “early to bed” type folks that Ben Franklin admonished us to be.

Most days this past week, the mail has been delivered after dark. All I can make of it is that COVID has played a role in putting postal workers on the sidelines, as postal workers fall ill. Another thing is the systemic “improvements” that Louis DeJoy has visited on the USPS. As I type this post, it is after 5PM, and I expect that today’s mail will not arrive until after supper – possibly much after.

It’s a good thing that postal workers are not dissuaded from their duties by the gloom of night.
