My fridge has a vegetable crisper; it’s where fresh vegetables and sometimes a citrus fruit go to die. I bet your fridge has a similar niche for neglected foods. Mine also has a long, shallow niche for other foods. We usually put, limes, lemons, and various kinds of breads there – tortillas for one.

Last night, we discussed today’s dinner plan. We decided on Beef Fajitas. I had already bought the flap meat for the meal, and I asked Susan to check to see if we had viable tortillas. She went to the tortilla graveyard and found some half-dozen packages of tortillas. One was labelled with a date in late February. The others were older. I inspected the February tortillas and pronounced them viable for today’s fajitas. She decided that the other packages would join other spoiled foods in our composting bin – RIP.

I went for a haircut this afternoon, and on the way home, I stopped at a grocery to look for guacamole and flour tortillas. I found the guacamole, but there were no tortillas. I’m not sure, but perhaps the Karen’s have been cleaning out the shelves of TexMex staples like tortillas. Who knows?

At supper, I started the fajitas on the grill. Susan sweated some sweet yellow onion and poblano pepper slices. She set the table too. I kept minding the meat on the grill, and later went to retrieve the tortillas from the fridge. There were none! We looked everywhere. I think that the good tortillas joined the others in the composting bin. Shit!

We debated going to our nearby mini-grocery mart for tortillas, but I decided to use our crispy corn tortillas that we use for chalupas. We had Beef Fajita Chalupas for supper; they turned out just fine. Tomorrow, I need to buy fresh flour tortillas at our usual grocery – unless the Karen’s have raided those shelves as well.
