Here is Dr. Klotman’s weekly COVID update. We need to settle into a mindset of endemic disease. This virus isn’t going away, but perhaps we can live with it once most of us are immune to the dominant strain. Dr. K sounds pretty optimistic; I’m a little more guarded.
If new variants of this virus emerge slowly or not at all, then I think Dr. Klotman’s assessment is spot on. We just learn to live with the virus just as Dr. Strangelove learned to live with the bomb. If new variants render our disease- and vaccine-acquired immunity ineffective, then we’re in for another round of pandemic. We will have to wait and see.
The main reason that this is important is that it underscores the urgency of getting vaccine out to the third world. If we fail to do our duty for the sake of humanity, then we and our progeny will pay for our shortsightedness.
