Central Texas hasn’t had much rain the past month. Last night, we finally got just under 1/2″. The Aztec god of rains, Tlaloc, and the Mayan god of rains, Chac, must have taken pity on our parched landscapes.

I planted Blue mistflower last year for the butterflies, and my three plants were well attended by migrating butterflies last Fall. The winter freeze killed all of the green vegetation, but the mistflower came back from the root stock. The plants are now a good 4′-5′ tall. I noticed earlier last week that they were full of flower buds – thousands of them, I estimated. With last night’s rain, they burst into bloom this afternoon.

I didn’t see many butterflies today. There were a few non-descript skippers and perhaps an American snout or two. Later, I hope the scent of the mistflower will attract Red admiral butterflies, Queen butterflies, Firey skippers, and maybe some Monarchs as well. All thanks to Tlaloc and Chac.
