I don’t know about you, but as I have gotten older, my skepticism has worsened. I have lost confidence in the fairness of our elections, in the independence of the Supreme Court, and just about everything else. The latest revelations that the Supremes have been (and allowed themselves to be) groomed by the religious right and their mega-donors are particularly disheartening.
I had foolishly thought, in my younger years, that the SCOTUS was the last bastion of democracy – the place that wrong-headed legislation and presidential acts went to die, to be set aside after being dismantled under the scrutiny of our constitution. Alas, it is no longer so, if ever it was. The SCOTUS is just another political actor subject to the same graft as are our elected officials.
It is such a profound loss that I feel – the loss of idealism – the loss of innocence. We have made whores of ourselves.
