Every nature photographer knows that a shutterbug’s most powerful tool is patience.

This afternoon, as I chatted on the phone with my brother, I noticed this hummer visiting our tower water feature. We had taken the hummingbird feeder at the rear of the house down yesterday. The nectar in the feeder was turbid suggesting either bacterial or fungal overgrowth – maybe both. Susan disassembled the feeder and put it in the dishwasher.

After my phone call, I readied the iPhone video camera and waited patiently. This is what I recorded.

Here are a few still shots taken in the minutes before the video. You can see the hummer on the right side of the water feature. This little guy got his fill of cool water from the cascade.

Susan prepared fresh nectar, and I filled the sterilized feeder and hung it up under the eave where I am sure the hummers will find it tomorrow.
