I listened to an interview with Elizabeth Gilbert on NPR this evening. The interview covered many topics, and it ended on the question of what advice she would give folks struggling with the pandemic. Her answer was that it “was not a test,” – emphasizing that whatever feelings one is experiencing at this time are authentic and valid. It was a very holistic, accepting, “god is in control,” type reply.

As I see it, that’s the Focking problem! The pandemic IS a test, and we, as a species, are scoring a D- at best. It’s a test of our collective intelligence. It’s a test of our willingness to make personal sacrifices for the good of everyone else. It’s a test of personal and national character.

Don’t tell me it isn’t a Focking test.
