If you have already seen it, skip my commentary; you already know what it meant to you and whether you enjoyed it. The Rotten Tomato critics gave it a 55 whereas the audience rated it at 77. I’m no critic; put me with the audience.
This flick is an excellent allegory for the Trump Presidency – a White House in the clutches of a crime family, an impending apocalypse (cometary rather than viral), a following of partisan sycophants, a media in the thrall of the administration, an administration sucking the cock of the ultra-wealthy oligarchy, and the discounting of scientists, science, and the demonstrable truth. It was a perfect rendering of the Trump presidency without ever mentioning his name.
I really enjoyed this movie because the story felt like a Roland Emmerich apocalypse to me, but it wasn’t Emmerich himself. I found that delightful because it meant to me that Emmerich isn’t the only storyteller who can spin a satisfying end-of-days yarn. I love these guys.
Stupidity in power is of little consequence until you realize that you must have a vastly stupid constituency in order to put stupidity in power in what should be considered a democracy. It’s a sad truth that, in America, we have the leaders that we deserve. Sigh. The movie ended with what could have been an echo of a Twilight Zone episode about a librarian.
