It’s pretty clear that coronavirus disease is here to stay. Like influenza, this coronavirus will continue to spread, mutate and circulate causing outbreaks, seasonal epidemics and recurring pandemics.
It is going to take worldwide vaccine uptake, the infection of hundreds of millions if not billions of people, and the deaths of many millions to end this pandemic. The vaccinated will have mostly mild breakthrough infections that will likely boost their immunity. The infected will likely acquire some natural immunity, and the dead will cease to be hosts for viral replication.
It’s a grim reality, but this virus is not done with us yet.
