We’ve been watching the DC Comic Universe series “Peacemaker” the past week. Peacemaker is an adult DC property. It resembles the Marvel series Luke Cage or perhaps Jessica Jones. They are all imperfect heroes – people who use their gifts to do good despite their deeply flawed personas. None of these series is a good fit for young minds unless there is a parent nearby to explain the premise that imperfect individuals can still behave heroically.
In Episode 5 of the first season tonight, a chainsaw was presented in the first scene. The chainsaw WAS brandished by the character “Vigilante.” You will most likely remember Anton Chekov’s admonition that every element of a story must have a purpose; so, the gun that we see in the first scene must go off later in the story.
Yesterday., Susan pointed out to me that John Cena appears in an ad for Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show. Cena is the star of Peacemaker, of course. I had to look him up because I know almost nothing about the actor other than the fact that he had appeared in the DC movie “Suicide Squad.” It turns out that he is a body builder with a very successful career in wrestling who has also been a rapper and an actor. He is a media personality in the spirit of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dwane Johnson.
As I read his Wikipedia page, I realized that he’s a good guy. Cena has fulfilled more wishes for the “Make a Wish Foundation” than anyone else. He has done PSA type work to counter COVID vaccine disinformation. He is clearly a Mensch.
Oh, and the chainsaw did indeed get deployed toward the end of Episode 5. Chekov was right.
