We have had can lighting in the back porch for at least ten years. Years ago, I replaced the incandescent flood lamps in those cans with more energy efficient LED bulbs.

Regardless of the type of bulb, the cans left a generous space between the bulb and the plastic shell inside the cans. This space made a cozy place for all forms of vespidae – yellow jackets, red wasps, mud daubers and the like. The mud daubers are generally inoffensive, but I find their nests annoying – especially when they are built in the recesses of the cans.

The yellow jackets are another thing altogether. They can be very aggressive, and their colonies can grow to several dozen members in a can. Last year, we had large colonies in two of the three can fixtures. So, I decided that this year I would find some way to install covers over these cans.

I found a potential solution on Amazon – LED can lighting conversion kits. I checked Home Depot online and found more. Today, I went to Lowe’s and bought three – 5/6” LED conversion kits made by HALO.

I disassembled each can in turn and installed the LED conversion. Each can had a hornet nest or a mud dauber home. They looked like this one.

The conversion involves replacing the existing bulb with an adapter that looks like a standard Edison type screw fixture with a wiring connector that goes into the LED fixture itself. The completed conversion looks like this.

Conversion done, there is no way for wasps to get into the can now
