Okay, it’s actually S.U.M.1 – the title of a 2017 Sci-Fi movie that Susan and I watched a week ago on Netflix. S.U.M.1 is the name/designation for a young man who is an Earth soldier from an underground refuge for humanity – Exilium. He is serving a 100-day military tour above ground in a post-apocalyptic Earth where he must man an outpost and make an effort to save some human stragglers who have not yet sought shelter in Exilium.
Earth is now under the control of the Nonesuch – a race of aliens who have taken over the surface and killed every human that they have encountered. The human stragglers seem to not believe that the Nonesuch exist, and they resist being “saved” by Exilium’s soldiers. I suppose that they believe that the Exilium is some kind of Deep State; it is underground, after all.
I enjoyed this movie despite the fact that the Rotten Tomatoes audience gave it a score of 22%. Perhaps it resonated with me because it showcased the corrosive effect of conspiracy theories, distrust in public institutions, and the general unravelling of society – the malaise of our time.
I recommend it, if you want a dose of Sci-Fi and an unexpected ending.
