We watched the new version of Dune on HBO Max last night. It was okay, but it was even slower than the David Lynch version. I actually enjoyed Lynch’s version more despite the fact that many a Frank Herbert loyalist panned it. I suppose these things are a bit like wine preferences. What one enjoys another despises. So it goes.

Lynch’s version packed a lot more of the story into a single movie. The sets were very rich and stylized. The Mentats were more distinctive, the weirding technology more plausible, and the worms somewhat more approachable. I also found the original Duke Vladimir Harkonnen more despicable than Denis Villeneuve’s. Again, it’s a bit of wine preference.

May Shai Hulude cleanse the Way.
