Susan and I play the NYT Spelling Bee Pangram game each morning. We used to get half of them weeks ago, but now we get almost all of them. More than that, I have come to realize that sometimes, the pangram solution is one of several possible solutions that the puzzle authors do not acknowledge.
Take today’s puzzle for instance. The letters are I-N-G-V-A-T-O. My first solution was Gavotting – participation in a dance called the Gavotte. No fucking cigar. My next proposal was Invagination – an infolding of a surface to form a dent, as it were. Again, no cigar. Both are valid words in the English language.
The solution that the NYT demands is Navigation. Okay, nautical terms are fine, but if you can’t handle a dance or a vagina, you really have no claim over the English language. Fuck you – arrogant pricks!
