Susan signed up with the Peacock streaming service a few days ago; there was a series that she wanted to check out, and it was only available on Peacock. It turns out that we can have Peacock at no extra cost. Last night, looking at various movie options we noticed that Jurassic World Dominion was available in its Extended Edition. We decided to watch it.
We watched about 2/3rds of it before we turned the TV off and went to sleep. This evening, we finished the movie. I really like having the ability to do that.
We saw the theatrical version at the Alamo Drafthouse some months ago. It was, like the rest of the Jurassic Park/World franchise, a very enjoyable movie – good characters, interesting dramatic situations, excellent soundtrack, and superb CGI. We recognized maybe three new scenes/sequences in the extended edition. One was a sequence of dinosaur-on-dinosaur violence; another was a dramatic confrontation between the Biosyn CEO (who looks a lot like Apple’s Tim Cook) and his protégé; and a closing sequence that shows modern and Jurassic megafauna together.
I’ll just admit that dinosaur-on-dinosaur violence is okay with me, but I think that the editors decided to leave that scene out to avoid the risk of the movie getting an R rather than PG-13 rating. It’s hard to know about these things. The scene between the CEO and protégé is a throwaway, in my opinion. The closing sequence with fauna of two geological epochs was nice. It may have been in the original movie, but I’m not certain.
My opinion is that the Extended Edition adds little to the theatrical version. If you can view it for free, I recommend it. If you have to open your wallet to see it, I say spend your hard-earned cash on something new that you have been wanting to see.
