IC (Index Catalog astronomy) 5070 is the Pelican Nebula. It is part of the North American Nebula (NAN) complex. It is a molecular hydrogen cloud (H-II region) like the NAN visually separated from its larger neighbor by a dark lane of interstellar dust – the dark area to the left of the Pelican’s beak in the image below.

This image is a stack of 74, 6-minute exposures collected on 9/26/22 and 9/27/22. As in my recent image of the NAN, this one was also taken through the 130mm astrograph fitted with a 4-band, narrowband filter. The camera’s ISO setting was 3200. Although the camera noise would be less at ISO1600 or ISO800, the narrowband filter rejects so much light that even a 6-minute photo would be terribly underexposed. Alas.

IC 5070 – The Pelican Nebula in Cygnus

Here are the NAN and Pelican side-by-side so that you can get a better feel for the two gas clouds. In wide-field instruments like binoculars they would appear side-by-side in the field of view.
