I’m not talking about Iran. I’m talking about the rising American Taliban whose latest victory has imposed a dress code on female representatives in the Missouri statehouse. Women in the Missouri legislature must now wear jackets or cardigans so that their bare arms are not visible to male legislators. I suppose that like some Iranian men, these Missouri misogynists fear that they will experience an involuntary erection in camera if they see a woman’s bare arms. I don’t know how these troglodytes plan to enforce their new legislative rules, but a Taliban-like Morality Police is not out of the question.
I propose that female legislators show up to their State House and Senate chambers wearing either a full Burka or a red gown and hat in the spirit and style of The Handmaid’s Tale. Dark Menstrual Red would be perfect, I think. A quick Google search will lead one to a variety of the providers of such wear. As for Burkas, I recommend Amazon purveyors. There are many.
Let all the female Missouri legislators show up in these garments for all official duties and get maximal media coverage. Like the notorious RBF dissent collars, this attire would be a silent, yet persuasively visible form of protest against male Missourian misogyny.
Of course, it is not up to me to conjure the Missouri women’s response to male legislators. It is clearly up to them. Nonetheless, I think that this bit of male stupidity should not go unanswered.
Cover their arms but wear shorts. 😜
Good thought. Non-violent resistance and the generous use of ridicule to expose injustice are the keys, I think.
