It’s a one-word line from the 1997 movie Starship Troopers based on a Robert Heinlein novel of the same name circa 1960. I recall attending that movie with our then 12-year-old son who had already read the Heinlein novel that year or perhaps the year before. Susan has quite a collection of Sci-Fi from that period.
The theater had hired a stern-looking rent-a-cop to mind the ticket line. As we filed past him, he grumbled some drivel about how he couldn’t understand how any parent would allow a minor to view this filth. In fairness to him, he probably didn’t have a 12-year-old who was as sophisticated and well-read as our own.
These many years later, Susan and I both reflect on this episode with a giggle. And I most often use the exclamation “Bugs!” to refer to the crawdads (crayfish) that I use to prepare rustic Spring dinners for my friends.
Today, I went to the Fiesta Mart to do some bug reconnaissance, as it were. Fiesta not only had bugs but blue crabs too. I feel a bug boil or two or three coming on. Bugs!
