For at least the past month, the weekly COVID updates have suggested that the apocalypse “has been cancelled,” to quote an iconic line from the SciFi movie Pacific Rim. This week, the news continues to be optimistic. Dr. Klotman’s weekly update reviews the recent virus activity maps (cases, hospitalizations, and wastewater results). Things are looking better in Texas.

In other COVID related news:

  • In 2021, pregnancy-related mortality surged by 40%, and almost all of it was due to COVID. Similar things have occurred during Influenza pandemics like the J1N1 pandemic of 2009. Pregnant people need to get vaccinated against both viruses.
  • The FDA has approved the bi-valent m-RNA COVID vaccines for children 6mos-4 years old. This matters to us geezers because protecting our kids against COVID protects us as well.
  • There is always a tale of regret where lapses of COVID vigilence occur. Sigh.

Stay safe. Maybe this virus has reached a local optimum in the mutation landscape and will remain this way (XBB.1.5) for a long time. On the other hand, the Pacific Rim SciFi apocalypse had two sequels – damn!

I’m crossing my fingers and wearing my mask.

    1. Unfortunate. Most COVID deaths these days are among the unvaccinated, elderly, chronically ill or immune-compromised. A few still occur folks with no obvious risk factor. Alas.
