Dr. Paul Klotman posted his 181th YouTube video address today. That’s more episodes than Seinfeld. Of course, Dr. Klotman isn’t earning millions per episode. In the fact, Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi probably earned more.
This week’s update touches lightly on COVID, the upcoming COVID vaccine, the return of Leprosy (aka Hansen’s Disease) in the Southern states, a few words about Candida auris infections, and Influenza vaccination recommendations. The highlights are:
- The majority of new US COVID cases is now due to the Omicron XBB.1.5 descendant EG.5 – this is always a moving target, of course. Another day, another mutation.
- The upcoming vaccines will target XBB.1.5
- Although the BA.2.86 strain is not closely related to XBB.1.5, recent reports from Moderna and Pfizer suggest that the new vaccine will marshal an immune response adequate to protect against the BA.2.86 strain (that bit of news that is not in the video)
- The best time for older folks like me to get the Flu vaccine is probably mid-September.
- The mycobacterium that causes Leprosy is spread from armadillos to people by direct contact. Among people, it spreads by means of respiratory droplets.
- Candida auris, often a healthcare-acquired infection, continues to cause more disease in the US especially among the elderly and immunocompromised.
