This is a no-spoiler review for a Disney+ movie that we watched this evening. This action/adventure story is part Indiana Jones light with a cat, and part Pirates of the Caribbean in search of a life-restoring McGuffin – a fountain of youth cum tree of life bit of magic (tears of the Moon) lost in legend in deep Amazonia. It is good clean fun with good guys, bad guys, clueless guys, and a cat – well, a felid to more accurate. Dwayne, The Rock, Johnson is a strong lead, and the rest of the supporting actors do a respectable job too; they reminded me a bit of the cast of characters in The Mummy movies.

The plot develops in a plausible way up to the point that the magic unexpectedly begins. I think that the magic twist is what makes the rest of story seem plausible. There are references to creepy things that one might expect to encounter in the jungle like snakes, poisonous arachnids, and even head-hunters. Winding up in a situation where one comes face-to-face with head hunters, not agencies that help you find a new job, but the guys who remove your face and scalp from their calvarium substructure and then dry it and sew it up, is always unsettling.

This movie didn’t do well at the box office, but it is good family entertainment, and I hope that it will earn its keep in the international, DVD and streaming markets. I recommend it because it is offered to us with a lust for life and adventure, love, and hope.

  1. Going to watch it this weekend. I see the “7 rings” marvel movie is also on Disney+ now and “dune” is leaving HBO max for a few months. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to keep up.

    1. We watched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings a few days ago. Okay, twice in the last week, if the truth be known. It was an excellent movie, and Susan absolutely loved it. I haven’t posted a review yet, but your comment tells me that I need to do that. Put some popcorn or your favorite treat in the microwave, and sit down for a delightful story. 🙂
