Among the faithful, it is the holiest of holies – I’m thinking Ark of the Covenant type holies. Among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, it is one of three places on Earth that are the centers of the Mystic Arts. Me, I always think of these when I hear the name of Rick Santorum. Unfortunately, tonight was one of those occasions.
Santorum was pontificating on the Ohio election results codifying reproductive autonomy in that state’s Constitution. He opined that, “this is why democracy is not the best way to govern.” I’m paraphrasing, of course. Susan asked what the hell that meant, and I responded that these morons always say, “We don’t live in a democracy, we live in a Constitutional Republic.” WTF does that mean?
It means that these authoritarian fock-ups believe that it is okay to use anti-democratic means to establish and maintain minoritarian rule. In fact, they even have rhetoric such as “the Tyranny of the Majority,” to justify minoritarian control of the government and its laws. What? Am I supposed to revile the Tyranny of the Majority so that I can live under the Tyranny of the Minority? Give me a damned break!
I don’t think that was what Alexis de Tocqueville thought would be the optimal answer to his concern regarding aThe Tyranny of the Majority.
