I’m not a fan of surprises. Not surprise parties or surprise recognitions or anything else unexpected. Perhaps that attitude stems from a lived experience of unpleasant surprises. If you are going to fete me or appreciate me, just tell me that you are going to do it so that I can steel myself for the event. Please don’t surprise me.
We had a nice thunderstorm last night. It didn’t rain a great deal, but we got thunder and lightning that we haven’t experienced in a long while. The lights even went on and off a couple of times.
Later, I went to my desktop computer thinking that I might purge some unnecessary back-up data from my Network Attached Storage (NAS) unit. It’s a pair of mirrored (RAID 1) 4TB disks on which we save computer backups, iPhone pictures, astrophotography files, and the like.
I immediately noticed that the NAS unit showed only one active disk rather than two. I tried accessing the shared directories on the drive only to discover that the computer could not connect to the NAS device at all. Merde! After some tweaking, I concluded that either the NAS box or one of the drives had gotten fried. Sigh.
I ordered a new WD 4TB Red NAS drive from Amazon, and tomorrow, I will wander over to Best Buy to get a new NAS box. Maybe it is the box that is fried rather than the drive. We will see. I can always cancel the Amazon order if it’s the box that is bad.
A bit more tinkering tonight, and I’m pretty sure that it is the NAS box rather than a drive that is fried. I cancelled my hard drive order and will try to find a replacement NAS box tomorrow.
And did I mention that I really hate surprises?
