You may recognize these words as the opening lyrics of a song by the group Garbage. It is featured in the MCU movie Captain Marvel. The music is played as Captain Marvel, Brie Larson, barrels down a desert highway on a Harley.

There are a few things that I do well. They have helped me to have a successful career and to find a good mate. Like everyone else, there are also things that I have never done well – falling asleep and dancing to mention only two. Susan discovered my predilection for initial insomnia early in our partnership. She quickly discovered that skin-to-skin stimulation (a hand or back rub) hastened the arrival of sleep. She also found that the sound of rain was, for me, a powerful soporific.

The forty years that we have been together, there has almost always some fragrant oil rubbed between our hands or her hand and my arms or back. It is soothing. Now and then, it rains, and we fall asleep to the sound of raindrops.

A few nights ago, we had a thunderstorm. I awoke earlier than usual to the rumbling of thunder and the sound of rain on our metal roof. Susan was fast asleep. I listened for a bit before falling asleep again – until Susan rousted me to hear the rain.

“Listen,” she said. “It’s raining.” She’s so considerate. She knows that it takes me a while to fall asleep and that I find the sound of rain calming. So, she wakes me up so that I can listen to the rain.

I think that everyone should have a partner so thoughtful. 🙂
