The “Arrowhead,” the “New Truth,” and just a light sprinkle of Clive Barker; that’s the South Korean series “Hellbound.” It’s playing on Netflix, and it seems a worthy successor to Squid Game.
Susan and I just watched the first episode of the first season. We were spellbound.
Let me just say that, not just am I an atheist, but I do not believe that a supreme, creative intelligence would condemn its creations to endless suffering – regardless of their deeds or beliefs. A lifetime on this planet, living with knowledge of our own inevitable deaths, and experiencing various forms of suffering, is quite sufficient, thank you.
Nonetheless, the point of the horror cinema is to scare the crap out of you. Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser” movie series did a good job of that; it is now decades old. This contemporary TV series reminds me a bit of other angel/demon series like Dominion, but unlike that series, the baddies here are uncompromising. Like The Terminator, they can’t be reasoned with or bargained with. That’s some scary shit. Not only that, but some of the lovely Korean ladies are wearing hair curlers during the day. It seems that is a “thing,” in S. Korea these days.
