It’s been a week of cloudy skies, and today there were occasional “sucker holes” in the clouds to allow for some opportunistic solar images. The next few days will be less forgiving. Alas.

Below, today’s H-alpha image shows a new and large, active region emerging from the eastern solar limb, serpentine filaments, bright plages around the other active regions, and some delicate prominences along both eastern and western solar limbs.

The corresponding sunspot image shows seven active regions; AR4079 appears to be the largest.
