In a recent Medscape item, Arthur L. Caplan, PhD, a medical ethicist, posits that Dr. Oz will be compared to post-Civil War carpet baggers. I think it is an apt comparison. But, he’s not much different than Donald Trump, in that regard. Trump had no Bonafide’s for public office. He had never been a public servant or a military veteran. He had never been a poll worker, a school board member or even a dog catcher! He was a TV personality, and that’s what Mehmet Oz is.

Oz has actual medical credentials, but he has forsaken those for TV ratings and personal aggrandizement. He pitches patent treatments (snake oil) and unproven nostrums as if they were things that could benefit people who are ill. He’s a self-promotor who has prostituted his medical credentials, but that’s just my take.

Here is Art Caplan’s take.
