More than a decade ago, when our son was a college student, he introduced us to Mom’s pasta sauce – Mom’s spaghetti sauce, to be specific. This sauce had whole basil leaves and whole garlic cloves, and we immediately decided to make it part of our routine pasta dishes. It was, we learned, quite pricey compared to more popular brands, but the price was well worth it. Mom’s was thick and savory and perfect for meat sauce. More popular and less expensive brands like Prego were, to our tastes, cloyingly sweet.
HEB and Central Market carried Mom’s for at least a decade if not longer. Then, sometime during the COVID apocalypse, the product disappeared from their shelves. Alas! Where once there had been jars of Mom’s, suddenly we found a variety of other pasta sauces. One of them was Yo-Mama’s. I decided to buy a jar.
That was months ago. Since then, we have ordered Mom’s from Amazon. Tonight, I prepared hot Italian sausage in Yo-Moma’s sauce over a bed of Bucatini. It was edible, and the pasta sauce was not too sweet. Still, without the whole cloves of garlic and whole basil leaves, it just wasn’t up to Mom’s quality. So it goes.

We had some crostini with basil pesto and a Mediterranean salad of pickled vegetables and Capresi.
