You may remember that sometime in the past three months or so, I posted about the replacement of bedding. It seems that bed mattresses need to be replaced every ten years or so. Pillows, depending on their composition, should be replaced every 2 to 8 years. Foam pillows have shorter lifespans than feather pillows. Ours are all foam, of course, and we replaced them earlier this year many years later than they should have been replaced. Alas!
Despite my posting about replacing mattresses, we did nothing to replace our now 12 or more-year-old mattress. That is, until this past week. A couple of weeks ago, we received a mail notice concerning bulky trash pick-up that would occur this week. Bulky trash pickup occurs during a week in which folks can put old appliances, bedding, couches, and electronics on the curb for city pick-up and disposal. It was the perfect time for discarding old bedding, we decided.
Earlier this week, we decided to look online for mattresses. There are so many – Casper, Nectar, Ghost, Purple, Saatva, Avocado and so on. After a bit of online detective work, we decided to visit Macy’s at the local mall. They carried several, but not all, of our potential choices. We drove there last Wednesday, and we went to the home furnishings section. Once there, we removed our shoes, and proceeded to try out each of the beds. After a bit of trial and exploration, we settled on the CASPER Original Hybrid mattress – $1695 for the Queen size. We walked around the store looking for sales help, but we found nobody to address our need to order the mattress. Sigh!
We came home, and I looked for this mattress online. I found it on Amazon for $1255.50. I thought a $400 discount was entirely acceptable, and I ordered it. Later, I realized that a waterproof mattress cover would be useful; our other mattresses have been treated to coffee, beer, white and red wines and cat pee. I ordered the mattress cover. The Amazon app said that the mattress would be arriving on Monday, but it actually arrived on the preceding Friday. There is no accounting for good fortune.
We broke down our old bed and moved its mattress and box spring out on to the front deck. The new Casper mattress, unpacked on the master bedroom floor, expanded for the next three days; it takes a while for foam mattresses to inflate properly. Over the weekend, I discovered that the new mattress had to be supported on closely spaced slats or on a platform or a CASPER Foundation. Just one more damn detail. I ordered the foundation which is scheduled to appear Wednesday. Crap!
So, here we are on Sunday. The old mattress and box springs are on the curb awaiting the tender mercies of bulky trash collection. Our new mattress is on the floor of the master bedroom – groomed with a waterproof mattress cover, and we are going to sleep on the floor tonight – with cats, I suspect. I think this is a both funny and romantic. When Susan and I got together the last year of medical school, my bed was a mattress on my apartment’s bedroom floor. Susan actually had a proper bed in her own apartment, but then she wasn’t the survivor of a divorce!
We await our bed foundation so that we can place our new CASPER mattress on our bed frame and once again enjoy a matrimonial bed together.
My mattress is about 2 years old so more than likely this is my last one. 🙄
