Breakfast around here is usually a cup of coffee. Now and then, especially when we travel, it will be a sausage biscuit or a breakfast taco. Brunch is a special treat. Nobody eats lunch here. Then of course, there is dinner.

For the occasional home brunch, Susan makes her riff on Avocado Toast. The avocado, a New World plant, produces a berry of the same name. When ripened, it is creamy and can be spread on a tortilla or a piece of bread or, in our case, a toasted sourdough English muffin. The avocado gets smashed in a bowl, seasoned with coarsely ground black pepper and salt, and slathered thickly onto the muffin. It’s a brunch fit for the native Mesoamerican gods – avocado porn.
