As I was walking through the grocery store parking lot earlier, I felt my phone vibrate. I looked at the screen. It was a FB message announcing that I had 17 notifications and new posts on four FB groups that I follow. I thought it amusing that despite being in the FB gulag, I keep getting these FB notifications.
Here’s the deal, Mark Z needs me. He needs to sell my attention to his advertisers. He needs me to get more of my real world friends on his platform so that he can monetize them too. But, I need neither him nor his platform.
I get daily newsletters on current events, finance, medicine and politics. If I want to see people acting stupidly, I can just turn on the news. If I want to find goods to buy, I can visit Amazon or AliExpress or any number of retailers’ online storefronts. If I want to chat with a friend, I can text or email them. And, if I want to share a thought with friends, I can post here on this blog where friends can visit at their leisure.
When I got home from my grocery shopping trip, I turned off FB notifications. Mark, I have put your platform in the gulag. You’re welcome, Pendejo.
