NGC2244 is an open cluster within a star-forming nebula called The Rosette located within the constellation Monoceros (the Unicorn). The nebula has a designation Caldwell 49. The stars in the loose cluster are young stars formed from the nebula’s gas and dust.

The three frames below are the composite of 15, 6-minute exposures. The composite image has been cropped in order to emphasize various features. The first is the whole camera field putting the nebula into perspective. The second is intended as a closeup of the nebula and its star cluster. The third shows the ionized hydrogen nebula and emphasizes some of its dark dust lanes.
