Maia has been practicing her predatory skills this evening. She has a number of toy mice, and among them a favorite that seems to be made of actual animal hide over a mold. She enjoys practicing her stalking and pouncing skills on this one, and she often brings it to bed along with other toys when we retire for the night.

This evening, she was positioning her favorite rodent toy on the floor close to me, and then running behind a nearly empty, collapsed clothes hamper that was on the floor several feet away. Then, she would leap over the hamper, landing on the toy, batting it around and then tossing it to a new position only to repeat the attack from behind the hamper. On her third or fourth attack, she took the toy between her paws and launched it into the air. It landed about twelve feet away in the dining room. If it had been a real mouse, she would have wounded it with her claws and pounces. Had that not been sufficient, the concussion after being tossed across the room would have either killed or at least stunned the vermin.

It is still a bit cool here in Austin, but Spring weather approaches rapidly. The roaches that have been cuddling together beneath the leaf litter under the deck will soon emerge and find their way indoors. Those that do will have to contend with predatory felids who have been honing their skills.

Those beetles would fare better staying outdoors, I think.
