People smarter than I have observed that many policy choices are not zero-sum games. In particular, choices involving the freedoms of individuals and/or groups, are not zero-sum propositions.
Denying the parents of children who have gender dysphoria access to healthcare, medicines and surgeries to address the child’s condition, limits the autonomy and rights of those parents and children, but it does not increase the rights of those who would impose such encumbrances. The right to gender expression and self-determination is not pie.
Denying reproductive autonomy to women does not increase the rights of those who demand that their autonomy be surrendered. The right to have exclusive dominion over one’s own reproductive decisions is not pie.
Denying the right of people to marry the person they love, regardless of their race or gender, does not increase the rights of those who object to interracial or same-sex marriage. The right to marry is not pie.
Denying the right to immigrate to asylum seekers who do not look, think or believe as you do, does not increase your rights. Unless you are a Native American, you have descended from people were asylum seekers at some point. Denying asylum to others does not increase your rights. The right to flee oppression and the threat of death, is not pie.
Denying the right to vote to individuals who do not agree with your views does increase the power that you and those who think/believe as you do can wield, but it is not just. Power is pie. Just remember that when you steal another person or group’s power, you are declaring that it is okay for them or someone else to do the same to you.
Be careful what you wish for.
