Here is Dr. Klotman’s Week 253 video address. The highlights are:
Measels
- There have been two cases of measles in Houston. They occurred in the same household. The individuals had travelled out of country. This is how outbreaks occur.
- Preventing measles outbreaks requires that 95% of the population get vaccinated.
- Preventing COVID outbreaks requires that 90% of the population get vaccinated.
- Preventing Polio requires 80%+ of the population get vaccinated.
- Dr. Klotman goes over the CDC’s recommendations regarding MMR vaccination.
- Measles is a world-wide problem. Vaccine hesitancy is a world-wide problem too
Norovirus
- There have been 495 US norovirus outbreaks this past year.
- Hand sanitizer isn’t particularly effective against norovirus; soap & water is better.
- If you get norovirus, you can infect others for up to two weeks after being symptom free.
H5N1 Bird Flu
- H5N1 flu was identified in dairy cattle in Texas in February, 2024.
- It has now been identified in hundreds of dairy herds in more than a dozen states.
- Bird flu spreads readily between cattle. It also spreads to dairy workers who typically develop only conjunctivitis.
COVID
- XEC is still the dominant COVID strain. There hasn’t been another new strain recently.
- Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) can be a manifestation of Long COVID, but it has many other causes.
- Burning Eye Syndrome (BES) is another manifestation of acute COVID infection.
